From the early days of the domain name gold rush
to the present, 2007, shows that the majority of domain
names registered are public domains. Currently around
85 million domains are registered. What does this mean
to domain owners? When you register a public domain
name ALL of your personal information you provided
when you registered your domain can be accessed by
anyone. How is that possible? When someone performs
a simple “Whois” search on your domain
name, it’s that easy and is not good at all.
All spammers and scammers know this and are constantly
searching public domain “Whois” records
to find your Name, Phone, Address and email, plus they
have your physical address….emmm!
So, what can domain name owners do about this flaw in the domain name registration
system?
Today there is what is called Private domain name
registration. What is this? A private domain registration
hides your personal information from being displayed
to the public when a “Whois” search is
done on your domain name. Your personal information
is SAFE and is replaced by other information (see example).
With private domains only the owner can access their
domain name records. Now that is great news for all
of us who have domains registered.
As the internet grows so will the spammers and scammers!
Domains registered will most likely double in the next
10 years, it would be wise to consider registering
your domain names private. Another benefit of buying
a Private domain name is the cost! The price is only
a few more dollars then a standard public domain registration.

As you can see by the example above Private domain
name registration is the clear winner over public domain
registration. Another big benefit with private registrations
is that you can apply them to an existing public domain.
You will have to check with your current domain registrar
to see if they provide private domain name registration.
