Domain name registration deregulated back in late 1999. Network
solutions at that time was the only domain name registrar to sell website
domain names. Today there are literally thousands of domain name registrars,
including domain name resellers that make up the majority of domain name
sales on the internet.
Before domain name deregulation the cost to
register a domain name was $70 for a 2 year( minimum) domain name registration.
Domain name providers today offer cheap
domain name registration for as little as $1.99 per yer! Some domain
name registration services actually give you a free domain name in hopes
of selling you other services. Beware of free domain name offers,
as you really never truly own the domain
name and they make it difficult to make simple changes to your domain
name such as the DNS etc.
